If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail -- Abraham Maslow
Have you ever known someone like that guy with his hammer? My dad was a tinsmith working at Cadillac. He was an absolute genius at creating or fixing anything with sheet metal, tin snips and a pop rivet gun. You can probably imaging the very eclectic and stylish home and auto body repairs my family endured over the years.
A lot of web designers are like that too. If like me, they are over thirty-five, chances are they didn’t go to college to become web designers. Some were graphic artists and designers, others were computer geeks (like me,) then there are marketing analysts, copy writers, advertisers, etc. Ultimately there are the Super Geeks who dwell in the evil empire of Google, (more about them in another section.) The point is, many of us came into this field with certain strengths and expertise that tends to bias our approach to what is most important in the development of a web site. We all have our own hammer! Hopefully over time, we mellow out a bit, get off of our high horse so that we can grow and learn what the essentials of creating a successful web site truly are.
I can’t be sure about you, but I measure a web site’s success by one simple measurement; my bottom line. And I only use one “key word” to achieve that success and that is communication.
If your bottom line hasn't increased, what do you have to show for your marketing investment?
Don't get me wrong. Key Word Analysis, Informative Graphics, Solid Organic Search Engine Optimization, Easy Site Navigation, clean code and even a few razzle dazzle widgets are all critical and essential to your Web Site's success. But a visitor arriving at your web site isn't the end of the line.
To make my point, I’m going to tell you something you probably won’t hear from anyone else; I don’t want to build a web site that you think is great! Well…uh, I kind of, sort of hope you’ll like it a little bit. But what I would rather do is educate and explain my part in this joint venture while at the same time, listen and learn carefully from you while you educate and describe to me, not just your business requirements, but all about your customers (both the good ones and the bad,) so that, together we can build a web site your clients and customers will think is great.
So where are you and I going right now? Just Shopping? If your search is just beginning, of course you have to check out other web designer sites.
